The AirScript™ closed-caption system from Show Translations uses the latest technology to deliver a desirable and unique experience to theatre-goers. Using a full colour, high resolution widescreen display and a high reliability wireless link, subtitles are delivered to personal handset devices in real time, in a wide selection of languages. In addition, a special feature of the handsets provides English subtitles, giving the hearing impaired a significantly enhanced experience of the theatre.
The devices operate wirelessly and have an internal rechargeable battery, making them cable-free.
The AirScript™ system can deliver simultaneous real-time captions in any language. The system currently provides subtitles in:
English
French
Spanish
Italian
Swedish
German
Russian
Japanese
Chinese
Dutchhe devices connect to a wireless network and are operated using the touch screen. The user is able to select his/her preferred language by pressing the corresponding language icon from the menu, and before the show begins there is an option to read the programme in the chosen language. Subtitles are then displayed automatically on the user’s screen. The system is operated by an operator located in the theatre who will co-ordinate the translation script with the performance, i.e. allowing for audience reactions or pauses in the show.
The operator follows the script in the original language of the show and co-ordinates the sending of pre-saved subtitles to each individual device. This means that when the signal is sent from a main computer, each device will simultaneously display the script in the previously selected language.
The handset has been ergonomically designed by leading product development agency Cambridge Consultants, making it comfortable to hold for all ages and abilities. It can be used equally well in either hand. Despite being technologically advanced, AirScript™ is incredibly simple to use. There are no complex menus or controls to master. Users simply touch the screen to select their language, then sit back and enjoy the performance.
We understand the importance of ensuring the other audience members not using the system also enjoy the performance to the full. Traditional solutions, such as screens placed to the side of the stage, can be very distracting to the majority of the audience. With AirScript™, this problem is avoided entirely.
The screen has been carefully designed to avoid the problem of ‘light spillage’ often associated with the use of mobile phones in the auditorium. The screen background is black, not white, and the brightness of the captions can be controlled centrally, to synchronise with the house lights going up and down, for example.
The handsets operate wirelessly and have an internal rechargeable battery, making them cable-free. The devices can be recharged simply by stowing them in the supplied charging rack. This solution means the batteries last the lifetime of the handset, and do not need to be replaced.
Each handset has a specially designed generic attachment facility on the rear of the case, which allows the handset to be installed in a variety of configurations within the auditorium, should this be desired.
The system automatically keeps a record of how many handsets are used in each language for each performance. The results can be used to monitor the system and optimise earning potential.
The AirScript™ system has been rigorously and independently tested for safety and regulatory purposes. It is compliant with the following European standards and directives:
The system carries the CE mark.
